Focalyard

Privacy

Updated 25 October 2026. Focalyard is a reference site for telescope magnification, eyepieces, and aperture. You can read it with no account.

Two visit counters run here: Google Analytics 4 and Umami. Cloudflare logs the request that fetches the page. Amazon may set cookies only after you follow a link.

Google Analytics 4

Google Analytics 4 counts page views on focalyard.com. It also counts clicks that leave the site for Amazon.

GA4 sets a first-party cookie named _ga, and a second cookie whose name starts with _ga_.

Google documents a default life of up to 2 years for the _ga cookie.

The browser sends Google the page URL, the referrer, a rough location, the browser, and the device type. Google receives your IP address to derive that rough location; GA4 does not store it.

GA4 does not hand us a visitor name. It does not hand us an email address or a card number.

Google Analytics 4 and Umami are the only analytics scripts on focalyard.com.

User-level data on a GA4 property can be kept 2 months or 14 months. Google documents both choices. The _ga cookie is a separate clock, up to 2 years.

Umami

Umami also counts page views on focalyard.com. It counts clicks that leave the site for Amazon, and the first use of each calculator on a page.

Umami sets no cookie and does not use local storage. It does not store your IP address.

The browser sends the Umami server the page URL, the referrer, the browser, the operating system, the device type, the screen size, the language, and a rough location. The Umami server works out the country, region, and city from your IP address. An Amazon click also sends the article, the product ASIN, and the slot on the page.

Umami does not hand us a visitor name, an email address, or a card number.

Cloudflare logs

Cloudflare Pages serves the site.

To deliver a page, Cloudflare processes the IP address, the browser type, and the URL requested. Those fields also feed abuse controls.

Cloudflare keeps the logs under its own schedule. The host policy is at cloudflare.com/privacypolicy. Focalyard does not keep a second copy of those lines.

Amazon links and cookies

Some articles link to Amazon with the tag focalyard-20. The tag is the query parameter tag=focalyard-20.

When you follow one, you leave Focalyard. Amazon may set its own cookies and record the visit under its Privacy Notice.

The Amazon account, the orders, and the payment card stay with Amazon. A qualifying purchase can credit the tag. The order contents are not sent back to us.

Product pictures in a gear row may load from Amazon. That request carries an IP address to Amazon's servers.

Email

If you email [email protected], we receive the address, the name if one was included, and the message.

We use that mail to reply and to correct the named page. The address is not placed on a mailing list. There is no newsletter.

How long we keep it

We delete correction mail within 24 months of receipt. Hosting logs stay with Cloudflare, on Cloudflare's clock.

We aim to reply to a request about that mail within 30 days.

Choices

You can ask us to show, correct, or delete mail you sent. Write to [email protected]. We aim to reply within 30 days.

You can block or clear cookies in the browser. That stops the _ga cookie and any Amazon cookie already stored. Umami sets no cookie, so a content blocker that blocks its script is the way to skip it. You can also install the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Focalyard is written for adults. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.
